This Morning Routine will Improve Your Day

  1. Identify how you are feeling shortly after waking.

Did you wake up feeling amazing? Energized? Sad? Tired? Lonely? Anxious? Horrible? Meh?

  2. Turn your attention towards the feeling with curiosity.

How is the feeling showing up in your body? What does it feel like? How is it showing up in your mind? What is it saying? Gather all the information you can about the feeling.

  3. Now that you know something about the feeling, ask it what it needs from you today so it can step back and relax.

Oftentimes, our feelings are in need of something from us. They may be alerting you to something deeper such as a change that needs to be made in your life. Almost always, our feelings need one of the following from us:

    • Understanding and validation from us. Try saying the following to the feeling:

      • “It makes sense to me that I would be feeling this way.”

    • Appreciation and Gratitude from us. Try saying the following to the feeling:

      • “Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Thank you for wanting what is best for me.”

    • The feeling needs to rest or take a break. Try saying the following to the feeling:

      • “Now that I know your concerns, I will take it from here. You can trust me to handle this. Your job is done and you can go rest now.”

    • An act of self-care. Try saying the following to the feeling:

      • “Now that I am aware of (the feeling) I will do (the act of self-care) in order to help myself feel better.”

  4. Optional: before going to bed, reflect back on the day to:

    1. See if you followed through with what you said you would.

    2. Identify how that improved or did not improve the feeling you identified throughout the rest of the day.

    3. If the feeling subsided for the day after validating and appreciating it, thank it for trusting you!

I hope you find this helpful!
